A Pakistani TV journalist has been shot dead in the North West Frontier Province (NWFP) area of the country, according to Imtiaz Awan, the bureau chief of AAJ TV.

"Our correspondent Siddique Khan Bacha was shot on Friday morning when he was on his way to the office after conducting interview of members of the family of a former military official who was killed by
Taliban in small town of Mardan, 115 km from Pakistani capital Islamabad," he said.

The correspondent was seriously injured in the shooting and died from his injuries on the way to hospital. It's understood the accused were identified by the police following eye witnesses reports.

Journalists demand protection

Local journalists have been protesting about the murder and are calling on the government to protect them. They are demanding that the killers should be brought to justice.

Siddique Khan Bacha was the former president of the Mardan Press Club, which has announced three days of mourning in his memory.

The Khyber Union of Journalists says such killings have created an atmosphere of fear among journalists working in the area.

International calls for an investigation

The Committee for the Protection of Journalists (CPJ) is calling on Pakistani officials to probe the murder saying that the failure to investigate recent attacks on journalists and arrest those responsible is creating a dangerous environment for journalists.

"Siddique Bacha Khan's murder must not go unpunished," said CPJ Deputy Director Robert Mahoney.

"The lack of an official investigation into attacks on journalists is only contributing to a rapidly deteriorating security situation for the press in Pakistan's northwest."

Kidnapping and killing of journalists in Pakistan is not simply an incident. If we look deep in this matter. then we will come to this conclusion that media men, along with all other Pakistanis are specifically targetted to creat unrest in the country and to creat panic in media persons.

Also, our media men are very effectively bringing the real stories behind the so called war on terror and this frustrates our so called friends. As their goals become difficult, once the truth comes in the public.

Therefore, I believe that our journalists and other media men should be very careful and also, must be mantelly prepared for the sacrifice of their life for the motherland.

I wish best of luck to all media men and journalists and pray for their success. Ameen.
