Kathmandu(PFP Report)
The journalists from all parts of the disputed state of Jammu and Kashmir decided here to boost cooperation and contacts among media organisations and journalists across the Line of Control in Kashmir in order to provide factual information to the people and to increase people to people contacts. The decision was made in a meeting hoisted by Press for Peace (PFP) in Kathmandu.
The journalists from all parts of Kashmir attended a workshop here which was organised by Panos-the organisation working for the journalistic development and promoting dialogue to bring positive change in the world.
After the concluding session of the Panos workshop, Press for Peace(PFP)- the UK based organisation and think tank, hoisted a meeting of the journalists which was attended by Syed Tajamul ul Islam (Srinagar), Afsana Rasheed (Srinagar), Haimat Kumar (Jammu), Raja Wasim (Muzaffarabad), Asifa Amin Kol (Srinagar), Rafiq Mughal (Mirpur), Ashfaque Pir (Srinagar), Amir Aman (Karghal), Renchin Dolma (Laddakh), Aurangzeb (Muzaffarabad) and Farman Ali (Baltistan). Director Press for Peace(PFP) Raja Wasim said that unavailability of accurate information to the people of Jammu and Kashmir across the LoC had a serious impact on the ongoing peace process in the region, therefore, he insisted, that continuous mutual contacts between media persons and civil society organisations on both sides of the LoC were required to be established on permanent basis. In the absence of factual and accurate information rumours and half-truths spread uncontrollably and create mess among the people on both sides and they feel vulnerable and insecure, he added.
Syed Tajamul ul Islam said that journalists were required to be in close contact with each other in order to provide factual and truthful accounts of the events and happenings on both sides to the people. We should bring the people closer, he added. Afsana Rasheed said that such contacts were to be continued on permanent basis. Ashfaque Pir said that people were always eager to know each others’ circumstances and such attempts by journalists would bring harmony and peace in the region. Asifa Amin also welcomed the move and said the contacts between journalists would be helpful in bridging gaps between the people of the region. It was decided in the meeting that Press for Peace would extend its activities in all parts of Jammu and Kashmir.-
