General Elections in AJK and my simple Questions

By: Aqeel Butt- Luton UK

Dear Friends:
Let me ask you some important questions as the general elections in your constituency are on their way:

  • Have you decided if and to whom you are going to vote for?
  • Have you checked the history or biography or election manifesto of the candidate you have chosen to vote for this time?
  • Have you discussed and debated among friends and colleagues what your duties and rights are in relation to the upcoming elections?
  • How elections and successful candidates effect your society?
  • Do you think you need a change? If yes, are you really asking for it?
I simply wish to bring your attention to WHAT I think about your former elected MLA to whom I have a great respect for as a person but how and why I differ with his ideology. Please note, I do not support any particular candidate in the upcoming elections as I just want you to understand how important it is to choose the right candidate who adheres to the needs and objectives of his constituents.
We simply want MLAs who do what exactly they are elected to do. Unfortunately, now a days, the elected MLAs think they have fulfilled their duties just becuase they have been engaged and contributed in various local social events during their tenure, given bogus statements, attanded handful meaningless assembly sessions without even saying much, involved in horse trading etc. whereas the sole purpose of their election is to make and ammend laws and draw suitable policies to improve the conditions of the people of their country. Surely, there is nothing wrong to attend weddings or funerals and other public gatherings as long as the purpose and intention is not to get votes to be re-elected in the next general election.
Our former MLA of has been elected for at least 4 times in the past twenty years, yet very little legislation and policy making has been done during his era to improve the quality of life of the ordinary people of AJK particularly in his own constituency. The unnecessary and unfair interference in the local administration in his name is very considered very unpopular so is misuse of the notorious bratherism. He needs to ask himself that why a majority of people in the Kotli city are dissatisfied with his role and are therefore against him? Does he realise why people of minor bratheries feel much neglected and therefore do not want him to be re-elected this time? Haven't you noticed the educated hence frustrated and demoralised youth of the constituency are not supporting him? What about the social injustice, bribery and corruption which multiplied on a large scale? Who was responsible to be a part of any solution not problem and who was liable to introduce new and tougher legislation and empower law enforcement agencies to combat the social evils? Who is responsible for massive unemployment resulting in a big influx of young and old to the foreign countries? Who is responsible for failing to introduce strict laws to combat malpractice in the medical, healthcare and other departments? Who was responsible to strive for social, health, judicial, education, departmental and economic reforms in AJK?
Please correct me and count to me even a single real success from the above list that your honourable MLA had achieved during his past 20 years of 'service'. I wish you guys wake up now, be impartial and question him about his past as well as his future role. If the Malik brathery of the constituency votes blindly again, perhaps, the general election will unfortunately produce similar results as it always has done in the past elections.
Personally, the former MLA may be very adorable person among his people, but I believe that is not good enough to fulfil the demanding role of an MLA as we need a revolutionary, well focused and futuristic LEGISLATOR who not only remains completely impartial in local administration but also legislates vigorously to change the life of poor and ordinary people of AJK.
As a responsible citizen of the state, you have right to ask each and every candidate about his or her past activities as well as his or her election manifesto in order to prove their worthiness of candidateship.
