Srinager: June 03, 2009:

After being released from police custody in Srinagar today morning, PDP-president & Leader of opposition in J&K assembly Mehbooba Mufti, left with senior PDP-leaders and MLAs for Shoppian town, district Shoppian, South Kashmir, accompanied by hugh number of police & CRPF troopers for her safety as well as an armada of media. At approaching Shoppian town, armed forces also harassed villagers of Thukroo on the way, claiming 'security reasons' for teargas shelling and breaking window planes of Majid and private houses.
Once arrived in Shoppian town, locals including many women gathered in large numbers - approximately up to 13 000 - to interact with PDP-president and to express their anger and concern about alleged rape and cool-blooded murder of 2 women in Shoppian Batpora on 28th of May this year, whose bodies were found near CRPF & Police camp.

However, things took an ugly turn when Mehbooba Mufti tried to address people publicly and did not succeed to deliver her speech due to chaos within the gathering. Scores of people shouted pro-azadi-slogans as well as pro Geelani and pro-freedom-slogans and slogans against troops and police, especially SP Shoppian, against human right violations, injustice and J&K-government. When PDP-president tried to leave the spot, people became very angry and didn't want to let her go. When her driver started the car, pushing aside some protesting women, her car was attacked by the crowd. Once she reached police-station, armed forces cordoned off the area and retaliated protesters with heavy teargas shelling and Lathicharge.
In police station, PDP-president learnt that until that time, no FIR was lodged. She tried to file FIR in this case of alleged rape and murder herself, but failed. She left with her cavalcade after 4pm towards Srinagar.
