PFP denounces shocking murder of young women
Muzaffarabad, (PFP report) Monday, April 27, 2009
Press for Peace (PFP) has strongly condemned brutal killing of an innocent young girl in Muzaffarabad and demanded that authorities must punish the culprits immediately.
“The recent barbaric incident of killing of a young woman by her uncle is unequivocal sign that women are not safe even in their own homes.”
PFP Researcher Miss Nighat Younas said in a statement here on Monday.
The statement said that a young woman was allegedly killed by her wicked uncle in Jullian Village in Panjgran police station jurisdiction when parents of victims refused to give Rishta to Pervaiz son of Muhammad Ali. Allegedly, annoyed and humiliated uncle shot her blameless niece during an attempt to kidnap her.
Condemning this fierce homicide, PFP official Miss Nighat Younas called upon government to arrest the culprit immediately. She demanded that government must enforce required laws to protect women, specifically to defend their inheritance and matrimonial rights. “It is collective responsibility of all religious, political parties and civil society to raise awareness among the people to respect human values and norms in order to perseverance of a just and peaceful society”, she added.
Referring to the HRCP annual report which states that at least 1,210 women were killed during last year in Pakistan, including at least 612 in so-called “honor killings”, she said that our legal system needs urgent and all-embracing reforms for provision of speedy justice, otherwise, pathetic living conditions of vulnerable sections like women would not be changed with shallow statements of officials for people’s security and welfare.
